THE AFET IN THE CAGE

A piece of Eser Lore. The Afet in the Cage is an Automaton built in the early years of a famous Eser clockwork master. It looks like a young girl made of massive gold in a similarly golden, round cage. She is holding two jugs from which, if you wind up the automaton, she pours water from one jug into the other, without ever spilling a single drop to taint the dazzling golden craftsmanship around her.

Not many have seen this work of art, but those that have describe it as breathtakingly beautiful, gorgeous enough to catch its spectator’s eyes more than any real Afet could. The girl looks as if it was alive, her eyes closed whenever the automaton stands still. If it is wound up, however, her eyes open, batting her golden lashes as if she was alive, and the automaton starts dancing so gracefully it is said to capture the hearts of those who watch the girl for too long. A rumor says that the girl looks so real and beautiful that those, who have owned the automaton so far, have pined away with grief, not bearing the thought of the statue never loving them back… so it kept being sold, from one person to another, bewitching the hearts of those who dare to look upon its beauty, getting their hearts captured one after another.

LIBRARY OF ANGELS

Story by Carina Schleich

It is said, that hidden somewhere in Cihan, there lied an ancient library. So vast and precious this library was said to be, that scholars all over the country came to learn and those seeking contact with their ancestors would make it a place of holy pilgrimage, since it was a library gifted to the Uçalım by the angels, that held all knowledge past and present and whose librarians, rumored to be angels themselves, chronicled every second of Cihan's history. However, greed soon overtook the scholars, for the knowledge was both helpful and harmful. Zealously those who worshipped the angels sought to cut off others from reaching the place, turning violent when they weren't obeyed. At this the angels grew sorrowful, seeing their gift abused and made unreachable for so many. They banned all Uçalım from it's halls, not letting another set foot in it for many centuries...

That is, until a young Eser came in search of a cure for his hybrid sister's illness. He had moved into the wilderness with her to keep her safe from harm, but now that she had fallen terribly ill, he had desperately searched for the fabled library to find a way to help her.  Moved by his willingness to help a creature that was shunned by all others, the angels opened the doors of their library to let him search their vast stores of knowledge. Leaving his sister to rest among the angels he ran to find a cure... Only to return minutes too late. His sister had passed the point of all help while he searched, making him weep and beg her fading body for forgiveness. Moved yet again, the angels decided to bless the hybrid girl, saving her life and turning her into a Nayice.

Overjoyed by their generosity, the Eser promised to go into the world and spread the cure for his sister's illness, so that others might be safed as well, while his sister asked to stay and help manage the library as repayment for saving her life. From this day on it is said that if an Uçalım's intentions are good and pure, the angels might grant entrance to the library's holy halls, though no one knows quite where it is to find...

Note: There are different iterations of this legend, depending on the family it's told in, like the ÇaÄŸlayan have a ÇaÄŸlayan and his terminally ill sister and so on...

THE CURSED UÇALIM

Story by Viktoria Saviles

„Night falls down, be safe at home; in the shadows something lurks, something waits, so hush down children and sleep well

If he hears your whispers, if he hears your snickers, he will come – so hush down children and sleep well. Mother watches, mother cares – so hush down children and sleep well."

There is a dark fairytale, Parents tell their young hatchlings, to keep them from strolling around at night. That something hides in the dark shadows, neither Uçalım nor demon, with whispering steps hunting through the night, with legs, as quick as a spiders and much more poisonous, as the blood of a Devrim. Just one kiss is enough to entrance you and be captured, gone forever more into the darkness. Stay save at night because the moment you are hearing it, it is long too late for you, no one can help you anymore.

“Once upon a time, there was an avaricious Uçalım, wanting to know more, than any other. Wanting to be as great as the angels themselves, create live himself, but in his search for knowledge and might, he ignored those close to him, until it was too late. Until his dear wife was gone.

In his grief, he didn’t see the fault lying in himself but by the angels because he wanted to know more about them and the only thing that happened was, that they took his wife? That wasn’t fair.

He captured a Kutlay, because who is nearer to the angels, as someone blessed by the angels? But the angels didn’t show up, even though he wasn’t anything other than kind to the Kutlay girl.

The Kutlay asked him, begged him, to release her. She didn’t know anything about the angels, they never showed themselves to her. But in his madness, he didn’t listen.

He just wanted to have more power. The power to revive the dead.

So he drank her blood, till the last drop.

He got a curse casted upon himself in his madness, killing someone innocent and blessed.

He lost his wings, every last bit that reminded of the origin from the angels themself, and he became a monster. Only able to live through the lifespan of others.“

There are many rumors, saying he is still alive until today, but nobody could tell you how he looks now.

Some say spiders are his tools, to capture sweet birds with their webs.

Others say, he himself is a shadow.

Most Uçalım will shrug it off, as a fairytale, others will be at their home, as soon, as the sun is setting, still scared, that he will come for them someday.
