ON UÇALIM

Uçalım are a bird species who live all over the land of Cihan, a nation filled with magical energy, creatures and treasures. They are a rather adventurous and superstitious species with a rich lore, and many of them have made it their mission to discover everything there is to know about all those legends and stories they have been told over the years. Some might not have been successful, but others have found what they were looking for, and some had honor, titles and riches coming along their way when they returned home.

APPEARANCE

All Uçalım (except Taarih!) have feathered ears and wings, and their skin is covered in soft, tiny feathers, resembling velvet to the touch. Some of them have also feathered cheeks or tails in different forms.

A Soul Clock rests on the back of every Uçalım, right between their shoulderblades. This clock is connected to their spine and can not be removed without causing severe damage.

After they die, their bodies usually get burned, leaving the Soul Clock back unharmed. The clock will then be put in a small casket and either buried, sunk into the ocean or placed on a pedestal or shrine, to honor the Uçalım even in their death.
Uçalıms usually have a life span of about 100 cycles, but some Devrim have surpassed that age by several centuries.

NAMES
Every Uçalım has three names:

  • The name of the bird they represent

  • Their normal name

  • Their soul name

About Soulnames

The last one is the name that they will be called once they go to heaven (or hell, if they fucked up). An Uçalım's soul name is between 4 and 6 syllables long (rarely 3 or more than 6), and is usually kept secret. It's not rare that only the Uçalım themselves (and their mothers, obviously) know their soul names. Uçalım get their soulnames from their parents or guardians. However, the legends say that angels guide those guardians, so the Uçalım will get a Soulname fit for an angel.

Rarely, the name is also used along couples that are very close to each other, but using those names in public will give you the same reaction as if you're noisily making out, so just don't. Calling an Uçalım who you're not close to by his soul name is considered one of the rudest and most intrusive things you can do, like forcibly grabbing or punching them.

Some Uçalım, whose magical powers are strong enough, can even use a soul name to curse a certain Uçalım. Those are called witches.

MUTATIONS

For Uçalım, mutations and irregularities (=traits) in someone’s appearance aren’t met with disapproval, but are worshipped as blessings. Therefore, the rarer an Uçalım’s traits are, the higher their status in their family is and the more respect they receive from their fellow Uçalım. Some families take this more seriously than others.
